Can you differentiate between Confidence and Self-esteem?
Posted on 5 May, 2023 by Marie Lafortune

Isn't it tricky? Right!
Confidence and self-esteem are related concepts, but they are not the same thing. Let’s break them down.
CONFIDENCE:
Confidence is a multifaceted concept that involves a belief in one's own abilities, skills, and qualities, as well as the ability to act on that belief. It is often specific to certain tasks or situations and can vary in degree and intensity depending on the individual and the circumstances at hand. For example, a person may feel confident in their ability to cook a particular dish but lack confidence when it comes to public speaking.
Confidence is closely linked to self-esteem, which refers to one's overall evaluation of oneself and one's worth. However, while self-esteem is a more general and stable sense of self-worth, confidence is more specific and situational. This means that someone may have high self-esteem but low confidence in a particular area, or vice versa.
Building confidence often requires practice, effort, and persistence. It can involve taking on new challenges, seeking feedback and support from others, and developing skills and knowledge in a particular area. Confidence can also be influenced by factors such as past experiences, social support, and cultural norms. Ultimately, having confidence in oneself and one's abilities can lead to greater success, happiness, and fulfillment in life.
SELF-ESTEEM:
On the other hand, Self-esteem is an essential aspect of mental health and is characterized by an individual's general sense of self-worth and value as a person. It is often not tied to specific abilities or qualities but reflects a more general and stable sense of confidence in oneself. A person with high self-esteem has a positive self-image and feels comfortable in their own skin, regardless of their specific abilities, accomplishments, or failures.
Self-esteem can be influenced by various factors, such as past experiences, relationships, cultural norms, and individual differences. People with high self-esteem tend to have a positive outlook on life, are resilient, and have a sense of purpose. Conversely, low self-esteem can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and anxiety, which can affect an individual's mental health and well-being.
To build and maintain high self-esteem, it is important to practice self-compassion, focus on personal strengths and accomplishments, set realistic goals, and surround oneself with positive and supportive people (please read my blog on self-esteem for a full explanation). Additionally, engaging in activities that provide a sense of accomplishment and mastery, such as hobbies or volunteering, can help improve self-esteem and overall well-being. A person with high self-esteem feels good about themselves and their place in the world, regardless of their specific abilities or accomplishments.
In summary, confidence is more situation-specific and related to belief in one's abilities, while self-esteem is a more general sense of self-worth and value as a person. Both are important for overall well-being and success and can be developed through a combination of positive self-talk, setting and achieving goals, seeking support from others, and practicing self-care.
